We woke up to a beautiful 4th of July. We started the day with calm water to tube. Once the issue of not having the right attachment for the air compressor was solved (sort of) we had an inflated tube and hit the lake. 1st up - Adam and Ann. An interesting feat in a tube meant for 1 person.
Next up...Kurt. He is kneeling in the tube as it is supposed to be used.
Here is where the "sort of" comment comes into play. The tube wasn't completely inflated so when we stopped for Kurt to get off we had a small problem of the tube folding in half and dumping him in the lake. Adam and I giggled while Grant was very concerned. For a long while after Kurt was out of the water Grant kept saying to him, "okay?"
Next Adam decided to go alone. What a big kid! We did have the chat before he went that while for several years all I have told him was "hold on tight" if the tube flipped he was to let go.

Grant was glad to have Adam back in the boat. We went back to the cabin for lunch and Grant's nap. After we put Grant down for his nap we went out to move the boat lift in a little. Believe it or not, Northern Minnesota is flooding and the rain is not welcome there. Anyway, as the guys are in the lake and we're hooking up the tractor a storm rolls in over the lake. As the wind picked up Al was putting the boat on the newly moved lift, Kurt was hauling arse with the tube toward the cabin's garage and I was taking the tractor to park it in the garage. As I pulled in the garage and tried to hit the door button to close it, yes the power went out. My neighbor says I should stop putting Grant to bed. :) We open up all the windows as it cools down nicely and enjoy a nice rain. When we get ahold of the power company they say that this will be a multi-day event. When Grant wakes up we head to a great pizza place in Grand Rapids called Sammy's. We try to avoid businesses that stay open on holidays, but the staff was very pleasant and said it was their pleasure to be open and help so many without power.

When we got back to the cabin the power was still out. Grandma gave the boys the presents she had bought for them at Target. Adam loves Jake and the Neverland Pirates and was beyond excited to get the spyglass, bandana, and map. Grant, our bulldozer fanatic, got a cement truck with buttons that make noise. I didn't think we'd ever pry it out of his hands to get ready for bed. The adults decided to see what morning brought with the thought that if there still wasn't any power we'd head for home on Thursday. There are so many year round residents up there that we hated to use the limited resources they had when we had other places we could go.
The latest update from the neighbors up there was the power came on Sunday about 1pm. There was another storm that went through Saturday morning that did no damage to the cabins in the area. I can imagine that a lot of the trees that hadn't completely fallen in the 1st 2 storms finished the job in the 3rd. Many we drove by looked as though you could know them the rest of the way over with 1 finger.
The kids were amazing on the trip home and we made it about dinner time on Thursday night. Uncle Mark brought over brats for dinner which was perfect after a long day in the car.
July 4 2012 is one for the memory books!
